About Ali and the Rohingya
Rohingya Community Gardens is owned by Muhammad Ali Juhar. It was founded in 2018. Ali Juhar is a Rohingya refugee farmer. His people are victims of genocide according to the US government. Their case was recently heard in the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands. In 1981 the Burmese government killed lots of Rohingya including Ali’s wife, daughter, son, uncle, cousin and grandparents. It was not safe for them to stay in their home country anymore so they moved to Bangladesh. Ali studied in Bangladesh for 12 years and learned farming work by working alongside his father. In 2010 however, Ali’s father was in a car accident and could no longer work on the farm. When his mother became ill as well, Ali knew he needed to do something to support the family and provide more income so Ali again started his trek across the world- this time by boat to Malaysia and soon afterward in 2018 he was given the opportunity to come to Portland and begin a farming business here. Total Ali Juhar has 22 years of farming experience: 12 years in Bangladesh, five years in Malaysia, and five years now Oregon.
